Every copy of ‘Painting in the Simulation’ varies from the one before. Each linen-bound tome supports a unique version of the cover-painting determined by its own signature drip. The exact formulation is in turn derived from the working process of the previous work, each therefore, a simulation of the last.
Hansen’s persistent excursions into the mechanics of the painted surface reverberate through the ages. His is a defiant continuation of brush and brushstroke in the face of accepted painting tropes and their infinite revision. Having acknowledged the impossibility of novelty in our media-saturated age, Hansen reminds us again (and again) that the idea of ‘the end’ is as allusive as the concept of infinity itself.
